Exhaling with Sound: The Body, Breath and Voice Connection
Yoga and singing have much in common. Both center on the body as instrument, encourage pure forms of self–expression, and cultivate a deep connection to breath and physical awareness. When used freely, the human voice is a great source of physical, spiritual and interpersonal connection. For many people, however, public voice use evokes feelings of fear, shame or judgment—whether in speaking, singing, or even chanting and meditative toning. The physical postures, attention to breath and meditative practices of yoga help to balance these emotions by allowing you discover the beautiful, distinctive voice that already exists within you.
As a certified yoga teacher and YOGAVOICE® Practitioner, Megan is passionate about how mindfulness based practices allow singers to re-pattern the body’s response to fear, injury and trauma. By mitigating unnecessary muscle tension and calming the mind, singers can reveal what is innately beautiful and authentic in the voice by asking not “is it correct?” but rather, is it “free?” To have a personal “yoga practice” implies an ongoing process rather than finite product mindset. It suggests a lifestyle, a way of being. YOGAVOICE®’s transformative approach to voice pedagogy allows the singer to form a vocal practice in the same way–to create a way of singing that is also a way of being.
